Walk Prague With Us

Prague is full of stories. You just have to look.

A guide to modern Prague architecture for children aged 7+. A book and six large fold-out maps in a sturdy box.

Illustration by Barbora Zachovalová: a bridge over the Vltava with a star and clouds above it, a boat and an onion on the water

About the book

We walk past them every day. Across bridges, past houses, stations and towers, through a park or down a street we know by heart. But what if we looked at Prague a little differently? Why is one building made of glass and another of concrete? Why do some bridges look the way they do? What is hidden under the streets we take to school? And what might the city look like in a few decades?

Walk Prague With Us is an invitation to look around, ask questions and head outside. We wrote it for children, parents, grandparents and anyone who wants to get to know Prague in a new way.

The book Walk Prague With Us with its illustrated cover
“Prague is not just an open-air museum of old towers. It is a living city that keeps growing, breathing and changing before our eyes.”

Look inside

Every page is a bit like a hide-and-seek game. Barbora Zachovalová’s illustrations are full of tiny details and stories that you can compare with the real Prague.

One book, six walks

Prague won’t fit into a single book, so we didn’t even try. Instead of a classic guidebook, we created six walks, each showing the city from a different angle: how it grew, how people live, travel and spend time in it, why some places change and what Prague might look like in the future.

Meet the guides

Six friends will guide you through Prague. Each of them sees the city in a unique way and represents a different element of architecture. One loves order and right angles, while another feels happiest surrounded by fresh air and greenery. Discover their superpowers and set off with them on a journey through the city.

Ripple on a scooter

Ripple

Hi! I’m Ripple. I never stay in one place for long. After all, the world is always changing and holds so many surprises! So why stay still? I can adapt to almost anything: I can bend over a river, stretch up into the sky, or fold myself into a little origami house.

Meter – a cup with glasses and a tape measure

Meter

Need something measured down to the last millimetre? Call me. I’m Meter. I believe everything should have its place, a clear structure and a perfect right angle. So I plan, measure and draw everything into precise lines and grids. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.

Twinkle – a yellow star

Twinkle

Hi, my name is Twinkle, and my superpower is light. In the evening, it might take you a little while to find me, but as soon as the sun comes up, you will see me everywhere. I love playing with rays of sunshine, reflections, shadows and all those little things that appear for just a moment – like tiny miracles.

Brut – a concrete block with a face

Brut

Huh. I’m Brut. I don’t say much. But when I do, I make an impact. I’m big. I’m heavy. I like standing with my feet firmly on the ground. It takes me a long time to get moving, but once I do, nothing can stop me. Good buildings can do that too. And the very best ones last forever.

Bulb

Bulb

If I find a grey corner, I know exactly what it needs – a touch of green. Call me Bulb! I look after trees, bushes, flowers, and even the cheeky weeds between the paving stones. Whenever I see a grey wall, I start imagining how I could cover it with climbing ivy. Nature always finds a way.

Aero – a white cloud

Aero

Whoosh! Did you see that? That was me, Aero. The wind is my second name. I fly through streets, slip between buildings and disappear faster than you can say “draught”. I love airy buildings – the kind that look as if they could run off at any moment or take flight like an aeroplane.

From the book to the streets

  1. 1Pick a topic.Start with whichever chapter interests you right now: bridges, modern offices, culture and public space, transport, the airport or the city of the future.
  2. 2Unfold a map.See what’s on it and plan your own route. Each walk comes with a route in Google Maps to help you. You don’t have to see everything at once.
  3. 3Head outside.Look for the buildings, compare the illustrations with the real thing and notice the details around you.
  4. 4Ask questions. Why does this building look the way it does? How has this place changed? What could be here in twenty years? The best walks don’t start with an answer, but with a question.
  5. 5Come back.Prague can’t be discovered in a day. The book can keep a family company over many weekends, holidays and school trips.

For schools and bookshops

For schools

Prague is a textbook that starts right outside the school door. The book works well for project-based learning, school trips and group work, and we’re happy to put together an offer based on your pupils’ age and number of classes.

For bookshops

Walk Prague With Us combines a children’s book, a guidebook, a map and a gift, and it works well in bookshops, museum shops, galleries and tourist shops. We can provide product data, photos and presentation materials.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the book for?

Mainly for children aged 7 and up. Younger children will enjoy the illustrations, spotting details and exploring together with their parents. Older children can work on their own with the texts, maps and tasks.

How do I use the maps?

The large illustrated maps are not geographically accurate. Each one follows a single theme and invites you to explore. If you want to plan a real walk based on the book, we’ve prepared a Google Maps route for each chapter – you’ll find them in the section Six walks.

Is it for families who don’t live in Prague?

Absolutely. It’s for anyone who wants to explore a city and see it with fresh eyes. And if you’re new to Prague, it can be your first guide to it. That’s why it comes in English, too.

Do we have to read it from cover to cover?

Not at all. Start wherever something catches your eye: pick a chapter, look for a particular building, browse the illustrations or just grab a map and head out. The book is made to be returned to again and again.

What’s in the box?

The book (280 pages) and six large fold-out maps, 480 × 675 mm, in a sturdy box. The 990 CZK edition also includes the Walking Prague backpack.
